How Aigner uses sand, Danube gravel, and moonphases to create superb wines.

We asked our partner, Aigner, what makes their location “Ried Upper Sand Mine” and “Ried Frechau” and their wine so special.

Wine of Austria:

What is special about your wine-growing region?

Aigner:

Our ranges “Ried Upper Sand Mine” and “Ried Frechau” are made of sandy soil, and at 10 meters deep is Danube gravel, which lacks a certain minerals in the wines. In these locations, the vineyards are 40–50 years old. The foothills can store a lot of water, so the vineyards do not experience stress during dry periods. 90% of our vineyards are made up of loose groves. On traditional sites, modern winemaking is combined with old-fashioned wisdom.

Wine of Austria:

What characterizes your product and what special features does it bring?

Aigner:

We do not take noble rot (botrytis) grapes for processing. This is why our wines have a juicy drinking stream. The tradition is very respected. The musts are processed completely cleanly before fermentation begins. In some cases, oxygen is added to the must, which promotes the longevity of the wines.

Wine of Austria:

What is special about your wine production?

Aigner:

We design our work in the vineyard and cellar according to the phases of the moon. This saves energy, soil compression and labour.

Wine of Austria:

How does your vinification differ from the rest of the world?

Aigner:

The wines are produced according to their specific vintage characteristics meaning that the year’s yield is not blended with harvest from other years, and all wines are made from a single grape variety.

Wine of Austria:

What is your favorite variety?

Aigner:

Grüner Veltliner – thanks to its many facets, offers very versatile possibilities.
